Biography
After he left the Maison française d'Oxford in 2006, Luc Foisneau was a CNRS Senior research fellow at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales in Paris, where he is now a Director of research in the Centres d'études sociologiques et politiques Raymond Aron (CESPRA). He works on the history of political ideas and the history of philosophy. When in Oxford, he started working on theories of global justice.
Luc Foisneau was educated at the Ecole Normale Supérieure (1983-87) and at the Sorbonne. During his time at Normal Sup he took the Agrégation (Philosophy) in 1986. After five years at the university of Tours he became a CNRS fellow in 1993 and defended a Doctorate on Hobbes and the notion of omnipotence in 1996. He defended his Habilitation à diriger des recherches at the EHESS in 2007 on theories of sovereignty and government in the modern era and became a CNRS Director of Research in 2008.
While a CNRS Senior research fellow at the MFO (2003-2006) he was a Visiting research associate at the Department of Politics and International Relations in Oxford where he directed the French part of a European training network on Applied global justice.
He is now preparing a book on Hobbes and XXth century political philosophy and the augmented and revised French version of the Dictionary of Seventeenth-Century French Philosophers. (introduction in pdf file here).
