Biography

Raphaëlle Branche is currently on secondment from the University of Paris-1-Panthéon-Sorbonne, where she is senior lecturer of Modern and Contemporary History. She was previously senior lecturer of Modern and Contemporary History at the University of Rennes-2 (2002-5). She has also been a Visiting Professor in the Department of History, University of Toronto (Canada) for a term in 2007.

She has been the coordinator of a "Young Researchers" programme of the Agence Nationale de la Recherche ("La guerre d'Algérie en métropole"). This project led to a book, recently published: Sylvie Thénault and Raphaëlle Branche (eds.), La France en guerre, 1954-1962. Expériences métropolitaines de la guerre d'indépendance algérienne, Paris, Autrement, 2008, 501 p.

Her main areas of study are colonial Algeria and the violence at war. She is organizing an international conference on "Rape in wartime" next may.

Her current research focuses on violence in Algeria from the 19^th century to the war of liberation in a broader sense (economic and political violence as well).

She is a junior member of the Institut Universitaire de France and engaged in a project on the French prisoners of war during the French-Algerian war.
