Biography

Shannon obtained her teaching qualification (Agrégation d'Anglais) in 2007 and taught French to undergraduate students at King's College London in 2007/2008. She is now completing her final year at the Ecole Normale Supérieure, working on the second dissertation of her two-year ENS Master's degree. After a generalist training at the ENS in Anglophone Studies (linguistics, translation, literature and history of the English-speaking world) Shannon started looking at agnosticism and women's role in society in 19th century Britain for her first Master's dissertation. Her pre-phd research has now moved on to focus on natural history in Victorian Britain and intends to map the role played by women educationalists in popularising evolutionary ideas through elementary science textbooks. This study will feed directly into her PHD on natural science textbooks in the last three decades of the Nineteenth century. Her research is supervised by Professor Pietro Corsi of the History Faculty in Oxford and the Sorbonne in Paris, and is linked to the history of science programme run by Dr Muriel Le Roux at the Maison Française.
