This research programme falls principally within the remit of the “Groupement de Recherche Européen” (GDRE) “European Democracies”, a joint initiative between the University of Oxford, CNRS, Sciences Po and the Maison Française d’Oxford (http://erg.politics.ox.ac.uk/index.asp). Its main objective is to facilitate academic exchange and the establishment of collaborative projects between researchers from various departments of Sciences Po/CNRS and the social science faculties of the University of Oxford; another central aim is to encourage comparative research on European countries. The ERG is responsible for coordinating visits to Oxford by French political scientists, sociologists and political historians, and several research programmes are currently underway as a result.
This new project, currently coordinated by Jean-Pascal Daloz (CNRS/MFO), is designed as an interdisciplinary initiative. From a political science standpoint, it focuses on the comparative study of political representatives in European democracies, and particularly on the symbolic dimension of their role. In a more sociological vein, the programme also aims to further the development of comparative studies on the issue of élitist distinction. Read more
Marie-Claire Lavabre (Directrice de Recherche, CNRS) is responsible for overseeing this research project, which also falls within the framework of the GDRE. The programme is supported by several research networks already formed around questions of social and political memory. As well as considering the specific case of Great Britain, it sets out to explore the issue of memory in Europe through various lenses, including that of the “politics of memory”. Read more
