Benoît Hazard is a visiting scholar at the Maison Française d’Oxford, with the EHESS programme. He is a social anthropologist at the CNRS, chief editor of the “Cahiers d’Ėtudes Africaines”. He is also the French coordinator of a Marie Curie project (REAL, http://www.real-project.eu/). Within the wider research on landscape transformations and sustainable trajectories in East Africa, his research project focuses on climate policies, socio-ecological changes and adaptations of pastoral communities of the Chalbi desert in northern Kenya. By crossing ethnographical data, colonial archives and climatic data, he reconstructed the past and present socio-ecological changes of a desert and discussed the changing bio-cultural frontiers of pastoralism (water, pastures and forest) in the Anthropocene. Specific attention is paid to the natural resources (water, pastures, forest) upon which pastoralists depend, and to how new subjectivities are merging in relation with the diversification of livelihoods.
