Their destiny was well mapped out: brilliant studies, the promise of a stable job and a comfortable salary. Despite all this, nothing happened as planned. Aurélie, Maxime, Hélène, Emma and Romain are graduates of Polytechnique, Sciences Po, Centrale Engineering School and other institutions of higher education. After graduation, they made a radical choice: to give up the future they were promised for a life they consider to be more compatible with the environmental and societal issues of their time. This film tells their story.

For a year, the young student director Arthur Gosset followed the journeys of six young graduates: the difficult decisions they had to take, their often-painful ruptures with the careers they had envisaged and their courageous choices to live in accordance with their ideals, whatever the cost.

The Director

Upon his arrival at Centrale Nantes Engineering School, Arthur Gosset co-founded Together For Earth, a student charity dedicated to the ecological transition, which now counts 50 centres throughout France. As a witness to the student upheaval affecting the Grandes Ecoles, he directed RUPTURES, a film that was voted "most moving" by the jury at the Cannes International Ecological and Social Film Festival when it was released in 2021. He has been interviewed by numerous French media: France INTER, RFI, Slate, Les Echos, etc.

The Producer

Hélène Cloître, a business school graduate and one of the film's protagonists, went through a 'rupture' after leaving her permanent job in retail. Her journey and her quest for meaning have been widely covered by the media in France, such as in Elle and on France Culture. She is also co-author and co-producer of RUPTURES and co-author of the book Basculons, a collection of testimonies from French students who are stepping off the beaten track, published by Acte Sud in 2022.

The Translator and UK Distributor

Raised in both France and the UK, Gabriel Bonnamy is currently studying Economics and Geography at the University of St Andrews. He discovered Ruptures in 2021 and decided to share its generational message with UK university students. Gabriel is particularly interested in sustainability issues and their intersection with contemporary economic structures. Gabriel has worked for an NGO striving to unite parties behind a common agenda of social and climate justice for the French presidential elections. Gabriel is currently in charge of organising screenings of RUPTURES in the UK and leading panel discussions on the movie and its message.
