In today's world, the upheavals brought about by the rapid development of information and communication technologies raise questions about the ethics of dialogue. The issue of identity is a pressing one, given the opportunity to change one’s self-presentation.  Rousseau’s novel, La Nouvelle Héloïse, provides a starting point for the normative side of identity in dialogue. It will be argued that literature and the arts shed light on notable aspects of the connection between dialogue, identity and norms.

Emmanuel Picavet is Professor of Applied Ethics at the Paris I Sorbonne-University. With Gilles Campagnolo he edits the journal Revue de philosophie économique. At the Sorbonne University, Professor Picavet co-chairs an interdisciplinary research group on ethics, philosophy and legal studies. He has published widely in the field of political ethics and has recently edited an issue of the journal Diogène with the title Formes de vie et institutions : entre nature et artifice (2023).

Emmanuel Picavet will give another talk on 'International Dialogue and Identity' from 2 to 3pm on Friday 7 March
