Please tell us about your research project
My doctoral research project is in the history of philosophy. I work more specifically in metaphysics, at the intersection between cosmology and theology. In my thesis, defended in December 2024, I examined the genesis of the theory of possible worlds during the early modern period, a theory that finds its fullest expression in Leibniz. My work consisted in tracing the conceptual developments that shaped this theory: the relationship between divine omnipotence and the plurality of worlds, the nature of location and space, and the compatibility of divine foreknowledge with human freedom. In particular, I sought to demonstrate that these developments converged to provide the basis for conceiving a plurality of alternative worlds as maximal sets of possible individuals linked by spatiotemporal relations. I am currently continuing this research as a postdoctoral fellow at the Università degli Studi di Milano from a new perspective, focused on mereology in modern philosophy.
Could you please tell us a bit more about your scholarship/exchange programme?
I am staying at the Maison Française d'Oxford in July and August 2025 thanks to a fellowship awarded by ENS-PSL. This opportunity allows me to advance two major projects in Oxford's peaceful academic atmosphere during the summer. During my stay, I am preparing the manuscript for the published version of my doctoral thesis. I am also taking advantage of this opportunity to complete two papers on theories of imaginary spaces developed by Jesuit scholastics, based on presentations given at international conferences during the spring.
First impressions of Oxford/the University?
The quiet atmosphere of the city during summer creates perfect conditions for concentration. The Maison Française d'Oxford offers a welcoming living environment where I have enjoyed discussing our respective work with other residents. The diversity of research topics among residents creates a stimulating intellectual environment. Having the library open at all times has been invaluable for progressing with my upcoming publications at my own pace.
