Book Launch ‘Huguenot Memory, 1689-1757: Narratives of Imprisonment, Enslavement, and Exile’

This event will launch Huguenot memory, 1689-1757: Narratives of imprisonment, enslavement and exile, published by the Oxford University Studies in the Enlightenment series (Liverpool University Press) in June 2026. Nora Baker (University of Birmingham) will be in conversation with Katherine Astbury (University of Warwick). The discussion will reflect on the act of writing in the wake of a traumatic rupture, and on the modalities of self-expression in the eighteenth century, with specific reference to the Huguenot post-Revocation context.

Biography:

Dr. Nora Baker is a Research Fellow at the University of Birmingham, where she works on the Leverhulme Trust-funded project 'French Print in England to 1685'. Her DPhil in Early Modern French, completed at Jesus College, Oxford, was funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council through the Open-Oxford-Cambridge Doctoral Training Partnership. She has previously held postdoctoral fellowships at the University of Tokyo and the Université Libre de Bruxelles.
