Please tell us about your research project.
My research thesis focuses on the influence of medieval literature on the bestiaries of J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis in their fantasy works. My study considers bestiaries as medieval artifacts, meaning they are reminiscent and continuations of the Middle Ages. To recreate various aspects of the Middle Ages, both authors incorporate realistic and historically inspired elements. Among these elements are animal representations, "hybrid communities," and human-animal relationships.
Medieval literary and religious bestiaries are reinterpreted and modified by Tolkien's and Lewis's experiences to serve their narrative, environmental, and literary objectives. To address my topic, I analyze both medieval sources, such as bestiaries, the Arthurian saga, and Beowulf, as well as contemporary sources from Tolkien and Lewis.
Could you please tell us a bit more about your scholarship/exchange programme?
I am coming to Oxford as part of a research stay from the University of Montreal to access the various sources I need.
